Key tricks to wellness at home

Had you told anyone a few months earlier that most of the world – including you and your friends – would be under lockdown for an extended period of time, they would have laughed at you. They would probably have called you stark raving mad and would have given you an extra wide berth wherever they encountered you.

Lockdown is no joke. It’s for everyone’s safety. Safety is one thing. Staying sane is another. Read on to ensure you stay sane through it all.

  1. Stay/become fit as a fiddle
    A healthy, and fit, body leads to a healthy mind.
    If fitness is important to you the lockdown does not have to prevent you from staying fit. Inevitably the way you exercise will be different but utilise what you can and come up with innovative solutions (YouTube has great suggestions too).
    If fitness has never been a priority to you, now could be the time to change to a healthier lifestyle. Tune into a health channel for inspiration – and exercise ‘classes’. Involve your friends – with roughly the same fitness level as you – in a push-up, squat or running-around-the-house challenge. Gradually increase the intensity of your exercise each day.
    Don’t forget to warm up thoroughly before you start each session.
    Don’t push yourself too hard – you have time on your hands after all.
  2. Bloggity-blog-blog-blog
    Blogs can be inspirational – they can teach you new things, raise awareness or provide entertainment.
    There are millions of blogs on the web – choose a topic that interests you or google the best blogs on whatever tickles you fancy. Subscribe to the ones you like best.
    When in need of quiet time, retreat to your own space and lose yourself in blog posts that appeal to you.
    Or: start your own blog! Now that’s an idea!
  3. Make that call!
    I mean it. No texting, no tweeting. No posting updates.
    Call someone! A friend who lives far away. A cousin who has emigrated. Somebody, anybody, you haven’t spoken to in a long time.
    Have a conversation. A real conversation. A long conversation. You will feel better afterwards and you will have news to share with those around you.
  4. Make something of something
    Paint a wall. Learn to cook. Embark on a DIY project. Plant some seeds. Attempt some woodwork. Get your hands dirty!
    Google arts and crafts for teenagers and find something that appeals to you.

  5. Write a letter to yourself
    Write down how you feel about the world today. Put your feelings – fears, hopes and frustrations – on (virtual) paper.
    Describe the circumstances surrounding you – at home, what your friends think and feel, in your town, in South Africa and what you hear on the news.
    Decide on a date in the future – in a year from now, in five years’ time, when the covid-19 threat is over – when you will read this letter again.
